First Time Being In India Part 9(Amber Palace20120305-1) /初めてのインド Part9 (アンバーパレス2012年3月5日―1) in English/ in 日本語

I had a nice rikisha guide from the hotel in Jaipur, young boy, maybe around 17 years old. He had the same smile as my Bangladesh friend in London, so he looked very familiar for me, seems like I was talking to my friend when he was very young.

When I asked how much does it cost to go Amber Palace, the receptionist at the hotel started typing with the calculator and showed at me.  It was a deal of their auto-rikisha boy, I remembered there was a rikisha car outside of the hotel.  Anyway it was cheap, so I jumped on.

Little boy on the Rikisha said many Japanese tourists do not speak any English, so he was happy that we could talk each other.
I went to Amber Palace, it was quite impressive. Huge and has style and beauty. Sadly there is horrible cheap café was inside of palace. “inlaid”

Stairs are so high, everything made of stones. Most of space, you can feel the wind, perhaps they meant to build that way, to keep the people cool. It was like a maze, although there are many tourist outside, I did not see many in inside. Mysterious wind blew, people’s voices are abosoved by stones, Sun and his shadow had a conversation with me. Seems like each of us trapped by ancient castle.

This rikisha boy took me to the interesting place near the water palace. He said it is worth watching, “ There is a factory where you can buy fabrics and clothes. It is not like market you see on the street in Jaipur, it is all handmade, a bit expensive, but there was a quality. No pushing, they won’t force you to buy anything”  I entered the factory. Many boys were stamping the fabric by curved stone.

The guy approached to me and he start explaining how they do. He said some money goes to the people who do not have job, and they make people like that to train here to work. The guy from the factory took me up stairs.

Upstairs, the carpets are laid everywhere on the floor, opened space, make me think of Old Japanese house. There are some staff covered by Sari and all the fabrics were in the shelf on the walls.

He started showing many pieces of carpet and fabric. He explained to me how to distinguish real handmade or not handmade one. He was convincing me that they have good quality fabrics, but I could not find any interesting design. I actually did not buy anything for myself during this trip, only gift for friends, acquaintance. Oh only tea I bought for myself. Perhaps I am boring person? But seriously I could not find any good design and quality stuff, that is why I did not buy any.

I thought if I could help their design. That’ ll be wonderful. Well that is why I am working on NPO Mirai in Japan.  http://www.npo-mirai.net/

http://www.npo-mirai.net/

First Time Being In India Part 8(Chocolate Textile) /初めてのインド Part8 (チョコ・テキスタイル) in English/ in 日本語

One of my design with G : ) it is prototype though.

I remember one more episode in Delhi. It was in the studio of the textile designer. He is a bit chubby, not so tall, very curly hair, his eyes are half opened always, and he looks like African rather than Indian. Usually, at lunch, we stood and ate vegetable curry and Indian bread with another Italian product designer in the garden. One day, at the lunch time,
“You know, I can’t eat lunch today, so you guys go ahead without me.”
He told us and his hand was on his stomach. I asked
“What happned to you?”
“I ate something from street food, then I have stomachache from yesterday.”
He told me with suffering expression, and I recommended,
“Eat Yogurt?”
“aha, that might be a good idea, I will ask my man to get some”
He said with smiling face, then Italian girl started.
“I ate the same food with him yesterday and I am fine. I am Italian and he is Indian, surely he shouldn’t be the one who’s having a stomachache now!”
Most of the time she is very quiet but now she was laughing to us.

G might grew up in a wealthy family, that is why his stomach is sensitive. I had remembered that I brought some chocolate with me, then I gave him, he was happy and start eating.
“oh this? Yes, I can eat.”
(really? Are you sure? You just want to eat, don’t you?)
I just thought that I hope he is not going to get any more trouble. I thought the chocolate was not going to harm his stomach even more. When we were talking together in the garden, He demanded the chocolate to his staff(servant?)
“Can you take the chocolate by the window?”
Then the guy brought the chocolate which is not the one he wanted.
“No,no, not this one, the other one.”
He said and he asked the guy to bring another one. It didn’t seem that he is treating his staff badly, but I felt Caste System even here. Well, in Japanese society, in the company, pretty much the same, I suppose.
But it was comical and cute to see their behaviour.

First Time Being In India Part 7(Delhi Tube) /初めてのインド Part7 (デリーの地下鉄) in English/ in 日本語

I forgot about telling you about underground(subway) in Delhi. There are some terrorists, so they check all your belongings before you go to the platform.  They do very roughly, because there are so many people. Platform is so big and open.

Interesting is the picture sign in the train. I see the “Do not spit in the train” illustration. I didn’t find on platform so they must be talking about “in the train”. It is interesting to look at those signs in different countries, sometimes you get what the character of their culture.  In Germany, on the window of the train, I saw the sign with crossed line on the beer bottle. Does it mean “do not through the empty bottle” ???
In Japan, they say about sound more. In England they say about eating food is forbidden in the train, we don’t say in Japan, because that is common sense ( in Japan of course).

There were too many fine signs everywhere in England, it is impossible to ask fine in Japan. Why do they have to give us a fear? Then we don’t follow the rule?

First Time Being In India Part 6(20120304 Jaipur) /初めてのインド Part6 (20120304 Jaipur) in English/ in 日本語

At this early morning, I was supposed to go to Jaipur, A had a party and he was doing VJ there, so we went to the venue. It was like a club in London, there are plenty of rich Indian people, everyone was wearing western clothes, Mojito cost around 7Pounds.

I came back as early as I could and waited for taxi. I wanted to go by train, but it was hard to get train ticket(you need to have a Indian credit card to buy it online, you have to be in the waiting list to buy tickets as there are crazy amount of population in India), I decided to go by bus. The taxi was quite modern, big and there are meter. As I had been got used to use auto rikisha, I felt quite strange to be in the modern car. It was 4 o’clock in the morning, and the road was very empty. It seemed very unrealistic to be In the quiet dark street in Delhi.

When I arrived in Bus terminal, I felt the same feeling as I was in the early morning in Japan or England. Awaken eyes, because I got up early, very quiet surroundings and a bit of dangerous atmosphere. At the terminal, there were a few tourist, and 10 year old boy who try to sell some food to make money, I think that was food. The ticket office opened later on, the old man receptionist was quite rude. There were class even on the bus. As I wanted reach Jaipur as early as I could, I have booked quite expensive one. The bus was so old and dirty, Someone told me before, in India, bus is much more comfortable than train.  I didn’t quite understand what he meant…

On the bus, there were soap opera was playing on the TV. It looked serious at the same time comedy.. well Indian style? Anyway there were no English subtitle, so I didn’t get it. I was quite tired, so I was sleeping in the bus most of the time.  I woke up sometimes, and I see the view from the window, sometimes I see the desert, sometime I hear the noises from the cars or auto rikisha. I was whispering to myself in my brain when I was almost dozing off “I see, in India, beeping sound of cars change according to different region…

Jaipur was hot. When I arrived at bus terminal, there were old men and women and young people who are covered by colourful clothes and rucksacks.  Petrol gas keeps coming to my lung, I checked the location of the hotel in the guidebook, then I start walking.

Under the highway, I was walking with 20kg rucksack on my back and front. I regret a bit that I brought a heavy military rucksack with metal.
Cars were passing next to my body very close. There was a traffic jam(I think it’s always like this) and they were not speeding so much, so I got used to it soon or after.
I saw Western Union, the sign was tilt, there seemed to be no one inside. There were damaged and dirty counter was there. I found it on the map of guide book, so it must be the one, but who is going this kind of place? I found Baskin Robbins on the way.

Finally I got to the hotel. The hotel was very comfortable, there was a roof top restaurant, I could relax well. There were two Japanese boys on the roof, but I did not talk to them.
People can speak in English in India, that was very helpful for me, when I was in Poland, it was a bit tough to travel.

---In Japanese
